Biography

Birth

John Roger Colynes (Collin, Colin or Colyns) was born about 1560 in Wales, most likely in Kidwelly, the son of Roger Collyn. his middle name being taken from his father's name in what was the common practice in Wales at that time. His mother is not certain, but his father was only known to have had one wife. [1]

Life Events

He sold a fulling mill in a deed of 1588. A significant clause in the deed reserved a widow's dower right: "EXCEPT . . reserved to a certain Jenete Jenkin. . during the tem of her life. . the third par. . by her right of her dower which was contingent thereon aft the death of a certain Roger Colin formerly her husband." Jenete Jenkin stated in her will of 1592 that she was the widow of Roger Collyn, Alderman, which helps confirm John's parentage. He was a shearman in this deed and a tucker in another deed. [1]

During this period in Wales, Kidwelly was known for its high quality wool, and the year he sold the fulling mill was also known for two historical events, that of the defeat of the Spanish Armada, and of the first translation of the Bible into the Welsh language. [1] p.16

In 1609-1313 John participated as a juror testifying to the accuracy of a survey of Kidwelly. Out of the approximately 164 burgages used as dwellings, John held 5 burgages, that would have yielded from 2 pence to one shilling per annum. The survey also mentioned "Collins Close" located north of Bower Street, presumably the place known earlier as Collyns Park of Park Collin. [1] pp.17-18

Death

The exact date of John's death is unknown, but is believed to be after the death of his wife, Margaret John, who died in 1628/9. [1] p.18
