Mrs. Mary Schreffler Passes in Hospital
San Diegan’s Grandparents Came Here Around Cape Horn From Virginia in 1848
Mrs. Mary Josephine Schreffler, 71, of 4270 Taylor St., a lifelong resident of San Diego and member of a pioneer family, died Tuesday in a local hospital. Her father’s parents came around Cape-Horn with Magruder’s Battalion from Ft. Monroe, Va. In 1848, and were quartered in Mission San Diego de Alcala where her father was born.
Guadalupe Machado, Mrs. Schreffler’s grandmother, was married to Albert B. Smith, who raised the American flag on Presidio Hill in the Mexican War.
Kept Flag High
Guadalupe Machado’s sister, Maria Antonia Machado, kept the Mexican flag from touching the ground when it was lowered.
Guadalupe and Maria Antonia Machado were daughters of Jose Manuel Machado, who build the Casa de Machado – one of four he erected in Old Town for his daughters – between 1830 and 1835.
The Casa de Machado was one of the first permanent houses to be built in California and now is part of the Old San Diego Community Church.
Survivor’s Listed
Mrs. Schreffler is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Harriett Fouquette; two sons, Carl B. Schreffler and James P. Schreffler; a brother, George A. Connors, Jr., and six grandchildren, all of San Diego.
Rosary will be recited in Goodbody’s Ivy Chapel at 7:30 tonight. Requiem Mass will be celebrated in Immaculate Conception Church at 9 a.m. tomorrow. Entombment will be in Holy Cross Mausoleum.
