The Conover family name derived from the VanCouwenhoven (VanKouwenhoven) family of New Amsterdam. This line of the family migrated through New Jersey, Kentucky, and finally settled in Oklahoma. They were strong farmers, hard workers, and good military protectors of the nation. James Patrick Conover was the last farmer of his line. He fell in love with Mary Holladay, a beauty who was a descendant of one of the first pioneers of Kentucky. They moved to Oklahoma to build their life. In his 70 years of life, he was a respected member of the community, a devout member of his church, and a loving family man. He established a farm that supported his family and built a house. He was musically inclined, and loved to sing Hymns with other members of the community on the front porch. James Patrick and Mary Elizabeth had 10 children, 8 of whom lived to adulthood. He realized the importance of education, and made sure that all of his children attended school. He was a humble man who cared for his farm and family with joy and thankfulness. During the last years of their lives, the earth and weather turned on them, and they experienced the Oklahoma dustbowl. James Patrick died in 1934 from a heart attack while milking the cows one morning,. His wife died one year later. We were always told that she died of a broken heart.
