In the census of 1900, Walter lived with his parents and three siblings in Parishville, New York.[2] In 1910, he was an employee for the Herrington family in Stockholm, New York.[3]
On August 20, 1913, Walter married Mary Grace Boyden.[4] The couple lived in Stockholm for several years.[5][6]
Walter and his family relocated to Potsdam, New York. According to the New York State Census of 1925 and United States census of 1930, Walter lived in Potsdam with his wife, three children, and mother-in-law.[7][8]
Walter passed away in December 2, 1961. His obituary, published in the Courier & Freeman of Potsdam, said the following:
"Walter A. Cook of Lawrence avenue, Potsdam, passed away last Friday morning. Cook was born in Bridgeport, Conn., on Feb. 15, 1887 to Walter A. and Anna Montgomery Cook. In August, 1913 he married Mary Grace Boyden of Canton and the couple moved to the farm on Lawrence avenue where they have lived for over 40 yrs.
Cook was very active in the Grange where he was Master of Potsdam, Master of St. Lawrence County, Pamona Grange, and he was also a past state deputy. He was a member of the GLF, and was a past committee member of the same. He was also a member of the Dairymen's League and a member of the Potsdam Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Phillip Mary Houston of Potsdam; two sons, Leslie W. Cook and Stanley B. Cook; two sisters, Mrs. Vinna Thomas of Parishville and Miss Goldy Cook of Sanfordville; and 12 grandchildren.
The body was removed to Stymour's funeral Home where friends and relatives visited. Funeral services were held at Seymour's Funeral Home in Potsdam at 2 p.m. Sunday, with the Rev. Wilbur Clark of West Stockholm and the Rev. William Caldwell of Potsdam officiating. Burial will be at Bayside Cemetery."[9]
