Biography

Lucinda Cook is a part of US Black heritage.

Lucinda Cook was born in 1861in Detroit, Michigan. She was the youngest child of Major Cook, a shoemaker, and his wife Priscilla Branham.[1]

In 1880, Lucinda Cook, 18, was living in the household of her sister-in-law Belle M. Cook (who was a teacher, widowed) in Washington, DC.[2]

In 1900 Lucinda was a school teacher in Washington, DC. She was living in the household of Simon and Chloe Butler. She is listed as "aunt" though she was in fact much younger than them.[3]

In 1910, she was a public school teacher in Baltimore, Maryland. She was living with her widowed sister Jennie and a fellow teacher, Miss Annie Williamson.[4]

College teacher in 1930.[5]

Lucinda travelled to France in 1936.[6]

Lucinda died at Wilberforce on 21 April 1937. The informant was her niece, Cora Parchment.[7]

Lucinda Cook as a member of Sigma Gamma Rho sorority at Wilberforce for several years during the 1920's. She worked at Wilberforce from 1915 through her death in 1937. Her positions at Wilberfoce University included Head of Normal Department, Head of School of Education, and Supervisor of Student Teaching. Central State University named a building after her in 1958. An article was written by Dr. Clara Henderson on the history and development of the Lucinda Cook Laboratory School in the "Wilberforce Reporter" April 11, 1966. [8]
