In 1902 McCauley and his family left Edmoton to farm near Tofield, but he was drawn back into politics when the province of Alberta was created in 1905. He represented the Vermilion district northeast of Edmonton during the first session of the provincial legislature and then was appointed warden of the newly established Alberta penitentiary in Edmonton.
Following the election of a Conservative government in Ottawa in 1911, McCauley lost his position as warden of the penitentiary. They moved to an orchard in Penticton, British Columbia for 14 years. Then they homesteaded near Sexsmith in the Peace River district of Alberta . Matthew died there 26 Oct. 1930. [3]
