Daughter of: Gardner Cone or Coon[1]
She appears in a register of voters in Sonoma County, California that covers the years 1900 – 1912. As women in California were enfranchised from 1911, it is possible that she was an early voter there, before women's sufferage was granted throughout the United States.[2]
In 1896 women in California had lost their first contest for the right to vote. In 1910 a progressive Republican administration was swept into power in California, and woman suffragists seized the opportunity and successfully lobbied the state legislature to put the question before the voters. On Election Day, October 10, 1911, the cause appeared to be lost based on early counts, but when the long count was finally completed several days later, Equal Suffrage had passed by only 3,587 votes – an average majority of one vote in each precinct in the state! The final tally was 125,037 to 121,450. In this case, the work of the suffragists in rural areas outweighed the more organized opposition of the larger towns and cities. With the passage of votes for women in California, the number of women with full suffrage in the U.S. doubled.[3]
Abigail died in 1924 at the age of 95 in Sonoma County, California.[4]
