Olive A. Coon was born in 1858 in Westford, Vermont, to parents David R. and Adelina Coon.
She was married first to Georg B. Hart of Sandwich, New Hampshire. The couple married 15 November 1882 in Lowell, Massachusetts. He died just four years, just one month after their anniversary, on 15 December 1886.
Her second husband was James Edward Durfee; the couple married on 17 October 1889. He had also been married previously to Emma Henry Burdge in 1885; she died during the birth of their twins in 1887.
Olive and James had two children of their own: Ross and Mabel. James Durfee died in 1907, and by the time of the 1910 census she was still listed as a widow. The name Olive Durfee disappears from all census records after that. The most likely explanation is that she remarried and was listed under her new surname. Of course it's also possible that she passed away.
I'm including the 1900 United States census with her son as the main name so it is shown that she and her husband lived in Montana before moving to San Diego, California, and that both of their children were born there. Olive's name and her son's birth place are noted in the census entry below.
Name Ross E Durfee
Event Type Census
Event Year 1900
Event Place San Diego city Ward 8, San Diego, California, United States
By 1910, Olive Durfee was a widow. Her son Ross no longer lived with her; they would have been 18 years old. It's possible he was away at school or married. At some point her son changed his name to Frank Edward Smith. In this census her daughter's name is Mabel, while in the previous census it was Mave [sic]. More research needs to be done to determine her exact name.
