Biography
Eliza was born about 1856 in Hockwold-cum-Wilton, the third daughter of James Cooper and Susan Green.[1][2] Eliza spent her working life as a domestic servant and by the age of 15 was already working for James Watson, the schoolmaster of Hockwold-cum-Wilton.[3] For many years she worked in service to the family of the Reverend Henry Murray Downton and his wife Laura (Bircham) Downton.[4][5][6][7] As a nursemaid [4] and later a general domestic servant,[5] Eliza moved with the family from the village of Brooke to the market town of Diss.
By 1939, Eliza had retired and was residing with Henry and Laura's eldest son, the Reverend Francis Downton in Newland, Worcestershire.[8]
