Biography

William was baptised on 29 Jan 1826 at the parish church at Monks Kirby, Warwickshire. His parents were William Cooper and Mary. His father was listed as being a labourer. [1]

William was mentioned in the baptism record of his daughter Caroline Augusta Cooper which took place on 16 Nov 1862 [2]

He appears in the England censuses from 1841. Although the 1841 census does not specify family relationships, it tends to list family members by seniority; this record reads William Cooper aged 45, born Warwickshire; Mary Cooper, aged 45, born (unknown); George Cooper, 20, born Warwickshire, Hannah Cooper, 15, born Warwickshire; William Cooper, aged 15, born Warwickshire, Amy Cooper, 12, born Warwickshire. (The ages appear impossible until one recalls that the 1841 census rounded adult ages to multiples of 5). [3]

William married Emma Sedgley on 6th March 1851 at the parish church, Monks Kirby. [4] His occupation was listed as sawyer. The groom's father was also called William Cooper, and he was a labourer. The bride's father was Richard Sedgley and he was a labourer.

On 30 March 1851, William was living in Richard Sedgley's household; he was aged 25, his estimated birth year was 1826, he was married, and his occupation was sawyer. His relationship to the head of the household was son-in-law.[5]

In 1861, William was living at Mary Ann Street, Monks Kirby. He was 34 and his estimated birth year was 1827. He was a farm labourer and was head of the household. Also in the household were Emma (Cooper) Sedgley, aged 36; Frederick Cooper, 9, born Monks Kirby; Joseph Cooper, age unknown, born Monks Kirby; Graham Cooper aged 5, both Monks Kirby. [6]

In Q3 1870, an Emma Cooper (i.e. Sedgley) died in the registration district of Lutterworth (5 miles from Monks Kirby). [7]

In Q1 1873, William married Martha Hancox in the registration district of Lutterworth, Leics. [8] We can be fairly confident that this is the correct marriage, because Harwood Hancox aged 6 was living in the Cooper household in 1881.

In 1881, William Cooper was resident in Monks Kirby; he was 53 and his estimated birth year was 1828. His occupation was estate laborer (ag). His wife was Martha Cooper, aged 54 born Stretton under Fosse, Warwickshire. Also in the household was Harwood Hancox aged 6 born Leamington. [9]

In 1891, William Cooper appears in the census for Monks Kirby; he was 64 and his estimated year of birth was 1827. He was married and his wife's name was Martha; therefore he had a second wife after Emma. Martha was 64 and was born in Monks Kirby. Other members of the household were Harwood Hancox aged 16, born Leamington, Warks and William Cooper, aged 10, born Norton Canes, Staffs. [10]

In 1901, William appears in the census at Main Street, Monks Kirby. He was 75, estimated birth year 1826. His marital status was married (this may be an error, as a Martha Webb Cooper had died in Monks Kirby in 1900 [11]. His occupation was waggoner on farm. The only other member of the household was Maria Cooper, aged 50, born Lynn, Staffs. [12]

There is a parish register burial entry for a William Cooper aged 76, resident Monks Kirby, buried Monks Kirby on 7 May 1902, estimated birth year 1826. Although this cannot be definitive given the information provided, it appears highly likely to be the correct record. [13]

There is a probate entry for a William Cooper, granted 21 Aug 1902 in the Warwickshire probate office; the death date was listed as 3 May 1902 and the beneficiary was Joseph Cooper, bricklayer. [14][15]

Research notes

Martha Hancox was born in the village of Stretton-under-Foss, which is adjacent to Monks Kirby. The 1871 census showed that she had one daughter, Sarah, but Martha was unmarried (as opposed to widowed or divorced). Therefore, when she married William, "Hancox" was her maiden name. Martha was baptised 18 Nov 1827 at the parish church, Monks Kirby; her parents were Isaac and Ann.
