Frank was born in 1844. He was the son of Francis Cooper and his wife Decima. [1][2] At the time of Frank's birth his father was a hatter, but he later ran a grocery business.
In the 1851 census Frank (age 6) was the son of Frances and Decima Cooper in Oxford St Peter in the East, Oxfordshire, England.[3]
As a young man Frank inherited his father's grocery business at numbers 83 & 84 High Street in Oxford. He married Sarah Jane Gill in 1872 [4] and 2 years after their marriage Sarah Jane began producing marmalade to her own recipe for sale at his shop. The marmalade proved incredibly popular and continued to be made on Oxford High Street for many years.
In the 1881 census Frank (age 36) was the married head of household at 83 High St, Oxford St Peter in East, Oxfordshire, England.[5]
In 1903 Frank moved the production of Oxford marmalade to a new purpose built factory at Park End Street in Oxford. The popularity of Oxford marmalade continued to grow, it was taken on an Antarctic expedition by Robert Falcon Scott and was referenced in literature including the poetry of John Betjeman and writings of Arthur Ransome.
In the 1911 census Frank (age 66), Marmalade & Fruit Preserve Maker Wholesale, was the married head of household at 155 Woodstock Rd Oxford, St Giles, Oxfordshire, England.[6]
