Elizabeth (Cooper) Platts was born in Derbyshire, England.

According to census, Elizabeth was born about 1800, in Hasland, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Please see research notes for possible further information. [1]

On 28th December, 1819, in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, Elizabeth married Robert Platts by license. [2]

The 1841 census shows Elizabeth (40), a farmer, son Robert (20) a Veterinarian, and daughter Mary (12) living in Gannow Lane, Killamarsh, Derbyshire. [1]

By 1851, Elisabeth was living back in Hasland with her family, and the census shows them living in Grassmoor. Robert (61) is a farmer of 20 acres employing one labourer. Elisabeth (52) is recorded as being a Farmers wife. Also living in the house are Ellen, their daughter (25), Esther Cooper (16), a domestic servant, and Robert's labourer, John Brailsford (19). [3]

When the 1861 census was taken, Elisabeth's house was quite full. She was still living in Grassmoor, Hasland, Chesterfield, Derbyshire, and recorded on the census were Robert (70), a Veterinary surgeon and farmer of 20 acres, employing one boy, Elisabeth (62) a Farmers' wife, Grandson Robert Edward Platts (9) a Scholar, John Hede (18) Farm Labourer, Ann Stacey (16) House Servant, and visitors Ellen (Platts) Ward, (35) Wife of Colliery Manager and Granddaughter Florence Mary Ward (8) a Scholar. [4]

By 1871 Elisabeth was now a Widow, and the census records her as being a Farmer of 23 acres employing one man. Also on the census were Granddaughter Mary Elizabeth Crofts (21) a School Mistress, Granddaughter Florence Crofts (8) a scholar, Ellen Stacey (18) a general Servant and Joseph Hoole (31) a Farm Servant (Indoor). [5]

Elizabeth passed away at the beginning of 1875 in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England. [6] She was buried on 21 Jan 1875 at Temple Normanton, Derbyshire, England. [7]

Research notes

There are two baptism records held on FindMyPast which could be Elizabeth. Both are baptisms in 1801, registered in Chesterfield, Derbyshire:

  • Baptism date 24th May, 1801 in Chesterfield Derbyshire. Father George Cooper, Mother Mary (no surname recorded) [8]
  • Baptism date 2nd September, 1801, in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Father Paul Cooper, Mother Sarah (no surname recorded).[9]
