Ellen was born September 17, 1852 to George Powell Cooper and Ellen Charlton McKean in Memphis, Shelby, Tennessee. This information is from Ellen's passport issued in 1908 and death records. Ellen grew up in Memphis and met Charles along the way.
Ellen and Charles Balfour James married in Memphis in 1875. They lived in Memphis while Charles worked with his father in the JM James Grocers business and cotton offices.
As many people did around the turn of the century, Charles and Ellen traveled with their children and relatives by ship to Europe. They obtained their passports and traveled to New York for sailing. We know they took several transatlantic sailings.
Elllen died shortly after returning from her last ship trip in 1927. She was buried in the historic Elmwood Cemetery founded in the early 1850s.
