Biography

James was born in Dallas, Texas on 8 Jan 1932. He was the son of Monia Coppage and Clarice Cumbie. ^[1] His parents divorced shortly after he was born (and his father re-married in 1935). In 1940 ^[2] James lived with his mother in Dallas. She worked as a nurse in a private home to earn their living.

By 1950, at age 18, James was a machinist helper at a furniture factory. ^[3] He lived with his mother and his sister's family. Ethel had married Leo O. Gunnels, a butcher.

Jimmy married on 1 Jul 1967 to Margie Bennett, but it ended in divorce on 13 Aug 1984. ^[4] Their marriage announcement said that James graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas, and had served three years in the Navy. His brother-in-law, Leo, was his best man. ^[5]

He passed away in Dallas on 20 May 1994, ^{[6] [7]} and is buried at Grove Hill Memorial Park. ^[8]
