He was the son of Maria (Zasa) and Agostino Coppola, who came to the United States from Bernalda, Basilicata in southern Italy.
He was born on 21 Mar 1917 in Ocean Hill, Brooklyn, New York City, New York, USA, but mostly grew up in East Harlem.
He started his career at the age of eight with the Metropolitan Opera Children’s Chorus. At the age of 9 he was in the Met's debut of Turandot.
During World War II he served as an army bandmaster.
By 1942 he had married Marion Jane Miller, a ballet dancer, with whom he had one daughter. After their divorce, in 1950 he married Almarinda Drago, also a ballet dancer, with whom he had 2 children.
He was a conductor at Radio City Music Hall. He was a director of both the Symphony and Opera Departments at the Manhattan School of Music.
He earned a bachelor's degree (1964) and a master's degree (1965) in composition from Manhattan School of Music and received honorary Doctorates from the University of Tampa and Quinnipiac University in Connecticut. In 1965 he debuted with the New York City Opera. He was a renowned American opera conductor and composer.
In March 2017 Anton Coppola turned 100 years old.
