Biography

William Clayton Corbitt was born 24 Feb 1828 in Alabama, USA. He was the son of John H. Corbitt (1804–1869) and Elizabeth (Richards) Corbitt.

In 1845 he married Mary Elizabeth Kinney (1830–1854) in Coosa County, Alabama. They had 3 children: John H. Corbitt and two twins. The family moved to Texas about 1850. During the move, in 1854, Mary and the twins died. One story says they died of cholera, another says they drown crossing the Mississippi River.

William's second wife was Martha "Patsy" Cassells (1838–1877). They probably married about 1854. The children of William and Patsy are:

Sarah Elizabeth Corbitt who married George W. Knight.
Susanah Corbitt who married John Quince Richards.
James William "Jim" Corbitt who married Mary Edna Cox.
Mary Corbitt (marriage unknown).
Seaborn C. "Sebe" Corbitt who married Martha Addie Fennell.
Elbert Corbitt who married Eliza Lillie Mcwatters.
Thomas Jefferson "Jeff" Corbitt who married Carrie A. Davis.
Emmiline "Emma" who married Lafayette (aka John Lafit) Johnson.

Patsy died sometime between 1876 and 1877. She is buried adjacent to daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Knight, in the old Hester Cemetery, just off the Perryville Road.

William's third wife was Susan Mae Cox (1855–1909). They got married about 1876, three days after Patsy passed away. There were several small children in the household and a replacement wife was needed right away. The children of William and Susan Mae are:

Laura Ellen Corbitt who married Samuel James Hammock.
Benjamin Franklin "Frank" Corbitt who married Myrtle Cooley.
Florence Corbitt who married Edd H. Bryce.
Ella Dora Emmaline Corbitt who married Thomas William "Tom" Smith.
