Baptised ay Moccas in Herefordshire [1] on the 17th of November 1698 James Cornewall was son of Henry Cornewall and his second wife, Susanna Williams. [2]
James went to sea and was promoted Captain in the Royal Navy in 1724 having succeeded to his father's Welsh estates in 1717.[2]
He first sought election to Parliament as member for Weobley in 1730 when he was defeated in a by-election by John Birch, who was subsequently expelled the House. James, John Birch and Paul Foley contested the seat in another by-election in 1732 which James won. In the election of 1734 he was defeated by Sir John Buckworth and John Birch but was seated on petition in place of Birch in 1737. It was his last foray into politics.[3]
Unmarried, he was killed at the Battle of Toulon the 11th of February 1744.[2]
