In 1913, Fred enlisted into the Welsh Fusiliers, and he served with them throughout world war 1. [4]

After the war, Fred emigrated to Canada, he arrived in Quebec on 20 September 1920 [5]

He married Ina Barclay in Perth, Ontario on 16 July 1927 [6]
