Alice was born in 1859. She is the daughter of Martin Cosby and Mary Lowry.

In 1870, Alice and her siblings are living with her grandmother and uncles in Cedar Creek, Bath County, Virginia, but her mother is not listed in this household.^[1] By 1880, her mother is also living in the same household.^[2] Where was her mother in 1870?
