He was a doctor.
From The Birmingham News: Dr. Robert N. Cotten, one of the best known and highly respected physicians of Birmingham, expired at his residence, 1608 Sixth Avenue, last night at 9 o'clock. He had been ill but six days. He contracted pleurisy, which developed into pneumonia, and death resulted speedily. The funeral will take place from the home at 3 o'clock this afternoon, internment at Oak Hill.
Dr. Cotten came to the Birmingham district about twenty years ago from Louisiana, and had resided in the city of Birmingham for many years. He established a fine practicde, and his devotion to his patients doubtless hastened the end, as he was out amont them for several days after he became unwell, and when he should have been at home under treatment. He was an honored member of the Jefferson County Medical society, a member of the Woodment of the World, and also of the United Confederate Veterans, having served throughout the Civil War. He was a very active member of the Church of the Advent and a Christian gnetleman in all that the name implies.
The deceased is survived by his wife, his aged mother, Mrs. S. E. Cotten, and a number of children and grandchildren. His children are Claude D. Cotten, Lee Cotten, Robert zCotten, Miss Alice Cotten, Mis Clarra Cotten, Mrs. Robert M. Brown, and Mrs. O.L. Stevenson.
