Archibald Daniel Council Co K 18th North Carolina Infantry - Archibald Council was born in 1822 to Marion and John N Council in Bladen County, North Carolina. He was the second eldest of seven children; five boys and two girls. The Council family can trace its family name back to at least 1623 with John Hodges Council from Isle of Wight, Virginia. The family moved to Bladen County in the 1740s with Archibald Great Grandfather, James, and Grandfather, John. Both of whom served in the American Revolution as Captains. Archibald worked on his father’s farm until 1851 when he was given a land grant for 100 acres just east of Fryer Swamp on November 17. On November 1, 1856 he was given another grant for an additional 50 acres. - Archibald, at age 39, enlisted on May 20, 1861 at Wilmington, North Carolina as a Private in Company K “Bladen Guards”, 18th North Carolina (State Troops (8th Volunteers)). He fought at Hanover’s Courthouse before being sent to General Hospital at Camp Winder at Richmond, Virginia due to severe diarrhea. He remained in the hospital from June 22 to August 6, 1862 before temporarily rejoining the 18th at Cedar Mountain and Second Manassas. Archibald was then given a sick leave in November 1862. He returned to service and fought at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. During the May 2, 1863 assault at Chancellorsville, Archibald was severely wounded. He was sent to a field hospital before ultimately being sent to Richmond. Archibald D Council died on May 25, 1863 due to Pneumonia brought about by his wound. He was 41. Archibald’s body was sent back home to Bladen to be buried in the Council Family Cemetery. He never married. -
