Joseph was named after his mother's father, Joseph Wright, and lived with his parents through at least 1850 in Fort Covington, Franklin, New York. At age 14 he was sent to live with his uncle, Anthony McKallor, in Argyle, Washington, New York.

In 1862 Joseph resided in New Haven, Connecticut, and on September 9th he enlisted in the Twenty-seventh Regiment Infantry Connecticut Volunteers, Company A. He was mustered into service October 3, 1862 and was honorably discharged July 27, 1863. The 27th were engaged in the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Battle of Chancellorsville, and the Battle of Gettysburg. But at Chancellorsville, eight out of ten companies making up the 27th were captured. Joseph was one of the soldiers captured at Chancellorsville. What remained of the 27th were released in July of 1863 and sent back to New Haven to be discharged. On the way home to Connecticut, they were reunited with 279 men who were captured at Chancellorsville, and had been paroled by the Confederates in a prisoner exchange.

In 1870 Joseph was a carpenter. He and Mary lived on Trumbull Street in Hartford, Connecticut while his brothers William and Archibald lived together around the corner on Pearl Street. From 1880 through 1910 Joseph and Mary lived in Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut.
