Biography

James was born in England in 1829.^[1] He was baptized and grew up in Mildenhall.^[2][3] In 1851, at the age of 22, he worked as a carpenter.^[4] In 1851, he also immigrated to the United States.^[5]

In 1855, he married Ellen Whewett in Cuyahoga County, Ohio.^[6] Together, they had four children:

1. William (b. 1857)
2. Edward (b. 1860)
3. Elizabeth (b. 1864)
4. Mary (b. 1866).^[7]

In 1869, he married Elizabeth Smith.^[8] Together, they had three daughters:

1. Ida (b. 1870)^[7]
2. Eliza (b. 1874)^[9]
3. Laura (b. 1877).^[9]

In 1870, the family of seven (James, wife Elizabeth, William, Edward, daughter Elizabeth, Mary, and Ida) lived in Cleveland, Ohio; James worked as a stair builder.^[7] In 1880, the family of seven (James, wife Elizabeth, daughter Elizabeth, Mary, Ida, Eliza, and Laura) still lived in Cleveland, and James still worked as a stair builder.^[9] In 1900, the family of four (James, wife Elizabeth, Ida, and Eliza) lived in Cleveland, and 72-year-old James still worked as a carpenter.^[5]

James passed away in 1903.^[1] He was buried at Riverside Cemetery in Cleveland.^[10]
