Biography

Sarah was the daughter of John Cowen (d. 1752) of St. Helena Parish, Province of South Carolina. [1]

On 27 January 1728/9 she married William Hazzard in St. Helena Parish. They had children:[2]

  • Sarah (b. Nov. 1730, m. Nathaniel Tucker)
  • Thomas (b. 30 Jan. 1732/3, bur. 5 Nov. 1753)
  • Mary (b. 22 Aug. 1734, m. Edward Tucker)
  • John (b. 15 Feb. 1735/6, bur. 15 Oct. 1737)
  • Elizabeth (b. 24 Apr. 1737, bur. 18 Mar. 1739/40)
  • Dorothy (b. 2 Sep. 1738, bur. 6 Sep. 1741)
  • William (bap. 27 July 1729, m. Catherine Wigg)

William Hazzard was buried 9 August 1741 at St. Helena.[2]

On 9 December 1742 she married, as his second wife, John Cattell. He was buried 27 December 1749 at St. Helena.[1]

Sarah Cattell of Granville County made her Will on 24 May 1766, and it was proved 11 November 1766. She asked that her estate, including named slaves, be sold and the proceeds divided among her grandchildren: Sarah[,]William, Catherine, Mary and Thomas Hazzard (children of her son William Hazzard) and Mary, Sarah, and Edee Tucker (children of her daughter Mary Tucker). She left one slave to her grandson Thomas Tucker (son of her daughter Sarah Tucker dec'd). Her children William Hazzard and Mary Tucker were left small money bequests.[3]
