She was registered as a teacher in 1925.[3][4] She was active in the Victorian Teachers Union, becoming a vice-president in 1961 and president in 1965–67. She was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire on 1 January 1970 for services to education.[1][5]
Hilma Cranley died on 29 August 1987 at St Andrew's Hospital in East Melbourne, aged 77.[6][7] Her funeral was held on 1 September 1987 at Springvale Botanical Cemetery.[8][9]
