Biography

From FamilySearch: George Allen Jr., the son of George Allen and Nancy -?-, was born in Jul 1786 in Rockingham Co., North Carolina. He married Mary Crawford about 1806 or 1807 in Greenville Co., South Carolina. She was the daughter of Moses Crawford. He was drafted and served in war of 1812 in Capt. William Turners Co. of South Carolina Militia, from 6 Nov. 1814 until 8 Mar 1815. He was in the Battle of Horshoe Bend in Alabama when the Creek Indians were massacred by General Andrew Jackson's forces. His brother, Duke Allen, also participated in that battle. George returned to his family in Greenville Co., South Carolina, but about 1833 he deserted his wife and children and left South Carolina.[1] He next was found in Walker Co., Alabama about 1846, where he was living with his sister, Nancy Allen Dill and her husband, William Dill. Where he was during the period of 1833 and 1846 is unknown. He never returned or communicated with his wife and family after about 1833. In 1850, Mary filed for military bounty land on her "deceased" husbands service in the war of 1812, but was denied a claim because the Pension office in Washington found that her husband, George Allen, had also filed for the bounty land from Walker Co., Alabama where he was living. [2] George also gave a deposition for Lydia Randolph in Walker Co., Alabama in April 1847 regarding her marriage to Abraham Randolph in Greenville Co., South Carolina. [3] According to the 1840 census, Mary had more children in her household than have been identified. George died in 1855 a pauper and ward of the County of Walker, Co. Alabama. [4] Mary discovered where her husband, George, was in 1850, when both of them had applied for a military land grant. Washington officials discovered this duplication and denied Mary her request due to the fact that her husband was alive and lived in Walker Co., Alabama. Mary did receive a widows pension after 1855.
