Biography

Son of Hugh Creighton b. Ireland and Jean McPherson b. Scotland

John Creighton served in the U. S. Seventh Cavalry. He enlisted 6 Jan 1872 in Chicago. His previous occupation was machinist. He was in an engagement against Sioux Indians on 13 June 1873 at Camp Hancock, Dakota Territory. He was in the Yellowstone Expedition in 1873 and on 11 Aug was in a skirmish with Sioux at the mouth of the Big Horn River.

Creighton was at the Battle of the Little Bighorn at the Hilltop Fight, in K Company under Lieut. Godfrey, 25 June 1876. In the chaotic retreat to the hilltop, K Company was the only company that covered the retreat under fire for the remaining six companies.

Creighton was discharged 6 Jan 1877 at Fort Abraham Lincoln on expiration of service, as a private of good character. He reenlisted and served from 29 Jan 1877 to 28 Jan 1882 in E Company of the 7th Cavalry. He was appointed sergeant.

Creighton had red hair, a sandy complexion and was 5' 5 1/2" tall (he was relatively short in stature, typical of cavalrymen).

In 1882 he married Susan E. (Hill) Andrews at Fort Abraham Lincoln. The Creightons lived at the fort until the War Department ordered its abandonment. When the new fort was established near Mandan, the Creightons took up a homestead nearby. Later they moved into the city, where John's civilian occupation was house decorator and painter.

Father of Hazel J. (Creighton) Dudder.[1]

He received a pension of $25 per month for the disability of rheumatism.[2] He was the North Dakota commander of National Indian Wars Veterans. He attended the 50th anniversary celebration of the Little Big Horn River fight on June 25, 1926.

Creighton died at Tacoma, Pierce, Wahington at 8:40 p.m. on 30 Jan 1935. Causes of death were intestinal hemorrhage, cirrhosis of the liver, chronic myocarditis and chronic endocarditis. He is buried in a mausoleum in Tacoma. His wife Susan died 4 Dec 1930 and is buried at Union Cemetery, Mandan, ND.[3]
