Biography

Jane was born in 1847. She was the daughter of Edward Cresswell and Ann Eyles [1].

She married John Beattie in 1866 . [2] [3] In addition to their children, they adopted Jane's nephew Stanley Beattie Cresswell as a son . Jane died on the 24th of May 1898 [4] She is buried at Seaview Cemetery in Nelson. [5].

Colonist, 28 May 1898.[6] DEATH OF A RESPECTED SETTLER — By the death of Mrs Beattie at Stoke on Tuesday last, many persons in that and other parts of the district have lost a true-hearted friend. Mrs Beattie, who had reached the age of 51 years, was born in Nelson, her parents being among the very first settlers. For the past 30 years she, with her husband, conducted a general storekeeping business at Stoke, and in that capacity found opportunity to do numerous kindly actions towards her fellow-settlers, so much so that she will be greatly missed from their midst. An earnest Christian woman she took a considerable part in the working of the Wesleyan Chapel at Stoke, and up to within a month of her death was Superintendent of the Sunday School held in connection therewith. A husband, a son, Mr Charles Beattie of the Lower Moutere, three daughters, Mrs F. Starnes of the Lower Moutere, Mrs Ernest Holdaway of Pahiatua, and one unmarried, and an adopted son are left to mourn the loss of wife and mother. The funeral, which took place on Thursday, was largely attended, showing the respect in which deceased was held. The interment was made at the Wesleyan Churchyard, Stoke, the Rev Mr Marshall and the Rev Mr Crump taking the service, the latter minister being the same who married Mr and Mrs Beattie.

Research Note

not to be confused with Jane Beattie nee Mellor 1850-1924, who also married a John Beattie. They raised their family near Cambrians in central Otago
