Fille de Christophe Crevier et Jeanne Evrard.

Name

Marguerite Crevier[1] [2][3][4]

Birth

Marguerite Crevier was the daughter of Christophe Crevier and Jeanne Evard or Enard.[5] Various sources estimate her birth date between 1643 and 1645 and state that she was born either in LaRochelle, France or Rouen France. See Tanguay, 1645[2]; Family Origins, 1643, Rouen[3]; LaForest, 1645, LaRochelle[6] However, the best available source for her birth information is her own marriage records which indicate she was born in late 1644 and baptized in La Rochelle, France either in the parish of Saint-Sauveur or the parish of Saint-Jean.[5][5][7]

Immigration to New France

Marguerite Crevier lived
in Canada, Nouvelle-France.

According to Family Origins, she is first mentioned in records in New France in 1648.[3] However, it does not identify what sort of record mentioned her in 1648. It is far more likely that she does not appear until after 1651 when she came to Québec with her parents in 1651.[7]

First Marriage Which Was Later Annulled

On 14 May 1657 in Trois-Rivières when she was 12 years old, a marriage ceremony was performed between Marguerite and Jacques Fournier, son of Michel Fournier (a lawyer in Paris) and Michelle Coyer (or Coier). The witnesses were Monsieur Godefroy and Monsieur de Saint-Quentin.[8][9][10][7][2][11] Jacques Fournier was a corporal in the garrison at Trois-Rivières at the time of the marriage.[7][11] The marriage was annulled about 1659 as it had not been consumated.[12][11] Several contracts in 1660 and 1663 recognize the marriage and the later cancellation of the marriage contract including Fournier's payment of 1,200 livres to Marguerite's father, Christophe Crevier because of the cancellation of the marriage contract.[7]

Before this marriage was annulled, Marguerite served as godmother on 24 Dec 1658 to Noël LeMaître in Trois-Rivières. The godfather was her brother-in-law Nicolas Gastineau sieur Duplessis.[13] Less than a month later, when Marguerite stood as godmother to her nephew Ignace Boucher, her marriage to Fournier is not mentioned.[14]

Second Marriage

On 10 Oct 1661, at Bastican in the presence of her brothers Jean Baptiste and Nicolas Crevier, Marguerite married Michel Gamelin, son of Michel Gamelin, a wine merchant, and the deceased Françoise Bellanger, both of Paris, France. Her groom was a surgeon in Trois-Rivières who was born in Saint-Lubin near Blois in Loir-et-Cher, France.[7][4] [15] They entered into a marriage contract on 16 Nov 1661 before the notary Severin Ameau.[7] Tanguay incorrectly dates this marriage to 1663.[2]

1661). (No. 82.) Vol XI pg 64 Notaire Séverin Ameau[16]

Marguerite and Michel stayed with her parents after their marriage until 15 Aug 1662 when Michel obtained a concession in Cap-de-la-Madeleine.[7] They had several children before Michel died around 1676.[7]

Children of this marriage

Recensement 1667 Census: LES TROlS-RlVlÈRES, LE CAP ET LA TOUCHE-CHAMPLAIN
Michel Gamelin, 27 ; Marguerite Crevier, 24 ; Ignace, 3 ; Marguerite, 2 ; Richard, serviteur, 22 ; 2 bestiaux, 23 arpents en valeur.[18]

Obligation de Marguerite Crevier à Charles Bazire (27 février 1677). vol II pg 173 Notaire Pierre Duquet[16]

Note: The parish registers for Cap-de-la-Madeleine were lost for the years 1661 to 1673 which is why there are no references to baptismal records for these children.

Third Marriage

On 21 Aug 1683, Marguerite, age 38 and now a widow, married François Renoult dit Lachapelle, age 39.[5]François was born about 1644 in the parish of Saint-Maurille, Angers in Anjou. He was the son of Cristophe Renoult and Marie Secle.[5] The marriage was registered in both Boucherville and Repentigny, the curé of Boucherville performing the ceremony, the curé of Repentigny being also present.[5][19][20]

Three children were born of this marriage:

  1. Marie-Madeleine was born 23 Jun 1684 in Trois-Rivières and baptized there the same day.[21]
  2. Jeanne born 9 Dec 1685 in Cap-de-la-Madeleine. She was baptized the next day in the home of Sieur Benjamin Anseau in Cap-de-la-Madeleine and her baptism was registered in the parish of Immaculate Conception in Trois-Rivières.[22]
  3. Michel-François was born 19 Dec 1687 in Trois-Rivières and baptized there the next day.[23]

Death and Burial

Marguerite Crevier died at about age 65 and was buried on 7 Jun 1707, in the parish of Notre-Dame in Montréal.[1][24]

Notes

Purported Fourth Marriage

Tanguay reports that Marguerite, having become a widow of Renou, married a fourth time in 1692 to Robert Groston and bore him seven more children between 1693 and 1702.[25] However, this is highly unlikely as Marguerite would have been between 47 and 50 at the time of this marriage and between 57 and 60 when the last of these children was born in 1702. It was, instead, the younger Marguerite Crevier, daughter of Nicolas Crevier and granddaughter of Christophe Crevier who married Robert Groston in 1692.[7]
