William Crittenden served in the 1st Regiment of York Militia, Canada in the War of 1812

Biography

William was born in 1781. He was the son of Benjamin Crittenden and Mary Hills. He passed away in 1866.

During the War of 1812, William Crittenden served as a private in both the 1st and 3rd York Militias. All of the related Collections Canada militia payrolls have not yet been searched for his name.

In 1812, he served as a private in a flank company of the 1st York Militia. These companies were created in the spring of 1812.

On Sept. 9, 1812, he was recorded in Capt. Ridout’s muster roll of the 3rd York Militia as a transfer from Capt. Selby’s Co. [1]

From Sept. 9 to 22, 1812, he served with Capt. Ridout. [2]

He may or may not have been present at the Battle of Queenston Heights on October 13, 1812.

On April 27, 1813, he was not recorded among the 3rd York Militia prisoners taken by the Americans at the Capture of York.

From Sept. 30 to Oct. 7, 1814, he served at York in a mixed detachment of 1st and 3rd York Militia under Capt. James Mustard of the 1st York. [3]

On May 2, 1826, William Crittenden, of East Gwillimbury Twp. and a former private in a flank company of the 1st York Militia, received a land grant of 100 acres on Lot 24, Con. 2, Vespra Twp. on May 2, 1826. [4]
