Biography

Anthony Crocheron was a Huguenot emigrant (1540-1790).

Anthony was born about 1650. He is the son of Jean Crocheron I and Marie (Unknown) Crocheron.[1]

Anthony Crocheron was sworn as executor of his father's will.[2] His father passed away after 13 Dec. 1695. From his fathers profile: "On 03 Sep. 1896 (sic), Anthony Crocheron took the oath of an executor. The witnesses were William Tiller, Thomas Morgan, Jean Cassier and John Dufrow. The will was proved before Governor Fletcher by the oaths of the above witnesses."

This shows that he lived at least until 03 Sep. 1896.

Anthony passed away about 1697.

Disputed Origin

Anthony's birthplace and birth date are uncertain. One source states that he was born in New York [3] ca. 1650. This is questionable and probably wrong because his sister, Adrienne (Adrianna) was married at in Zale in Walsh- Vlanderin.

However, 1650 is before the year reported for his parents' marriage, so something is inconsistent.

If the data on his parents marriage were correct, a more plausible birth year would be not earlier than 1651. His parents, together with their children appear to have emigrated to New Netherlands as a family.

Another source reports that he was born in Belgium. If the birth year of about 1650 were correct, it would support the assertion that his parents were married earlier than their stated wedding year of 1659.

Someone may have become confused about Flanders, Belgium vs. Flanders, New York, USA, which is located in Suffolk County, Long Island, New York USA.

More research is needed to clarify Anthony's data, as it relates to the broader context of his family's timeline. This research should include finding additional sources, if available, and evaluating the quality, consistency, and plausibility of existing sources on related profiles.

Family Timeline

This section is intended to correlate or approximate the known data with a view toward identifying inconsistencies and determining which data are more probably correct.

From WIkiTree Profiles:

Jean Crocheron I, born about 1610 or 1626? Marie Crocheron, born about 1610 or 1626?[4]

Reported birth years and locations of the children of Jean and Marie:

Nicholas, about 1648 in Zale, Welsh Flanders, Belgium
Anthony, about 1650 in Belgium
Adrianna, about 1652 in Rysszl, Vlaanderin, Holland
Katherine about 1654 in Zele, East Flanders, Belgium
Styntje, about 1656 in Flanders, Belgium
Jean II, about 1658 on Staten Island, New Netherland
Maria, about 1660 on Staten Island, New Netherland
Jannetje, 1660 in The Netherlands
Margaret, about 1664 in Flanders (Flanders, New Netherland or Flanders, Belgium???)

The approximate nature of most birth years taken together with the birth locations suggests that some aspect of this suggested (and very approximate) birth order almost certainly must be incorrect. After Jean I and Marie had arrived in New Netherland, they are not likely to have returned to Belgium to have any more children. Firstly, the reason for their emigration was religious persecution. Secondly, the trans-Atlantic voyage, in those days, was very dangerous and arduous, to say nothing of expensive and uncomfortable. To determine a better birth order, we need to look at sources to describe birth records. This will help to bracket the emigration date of the family.

This analysis is also intended to come up with a better estimate of Jean I and Marie's marriage date. If Nicholas' birth year were correct, they must have been married prior to 1647. This is a more likely date than 1659, as their ages for starting a family seem to be too old for Marie to have had nine children.

For comparison, consider, the following data for the family of Jean and Marie Crocheron.[5]

Marie married Jean Crocheron before 1648 (assuming age 18 at marriage.)

Children of Jean Crocheron I b. 1612 d. bef. 3 Sep. 1696 and Marie b. between 1620 and 1630:

1. Nicholas b. ca. 1648, d. before 23 Dec 1707
2. Anthony b. ca. 1650, d. before 14 Dec 1697
3. Adrianna b. ca. 1657
4. Katherine b. ca. 1657
5. Jean II b. 1658, d. between 6 Aug 1725 and 7 Jun 1727
6. Marie b. c 1660, d. b 10 Feb 1702/3
7. Jannetje b. s 1662, d. b 1693

Missing: Styntje and Margaret
