Biography

The daughter of Norman Crofoot and his first wife, Lana Biddle, Sarah was born in Cayuga County, New York in 1840. The family soon migrated west to Michigan, where her father acquired land to homestead. In 1850, they resided in Mendon Township, in St. Joseph County.[1] In 1860, they were living in Almena Township and farming the Van Buren County land acquired under the Lands Act of 1820.[2]

Sarah married Daniel A Groff (1834-1902), the son of Stephen Groff of New York and Eliza Blanchard of Vermont, marrying in Van Buren County on April 27, 1862.[3] They made their home in South Haven, where Daniel worked as a teamster.[4] They had two children together:

  1. Charles Hiram (1864-1917)
  2. Myrtle B. (1871-)

By 1880, Daniel and Sarah had begun to farm in South Haven.[5] In 1900, Daniel had returned to his work as a teamster and their son Charles, then age 36, was living at home and working as a teamster with his father.[6] Daniel died in 1902 from a neglected cold that turned into a catarrh of his stomach and intestines.

Sarah remarried, marrying William Herbert, Jr. (1835-1917), the son of William Herbert and Charlotte Bennett, English immigrants, in Plainwell, Michigan on April 30, 1910.[7] William had been married previously to Clara Ann Brown Farbrother, who had passed away in 1909. (Clara had two children with Herbert, her second husband; she had been married previously to James Norman, with whom she had six children.) William was a mason, and passed away from apoplexy at the age of 82, in 1917. Sarah passed away from kidney failure at the age of 77, in 1918,[8] and is buried at Lakeview Cemetery in South Haven.[9]
