In 1871 at Bolton, Lancashire, he married Margaret English East. ^[2] She was from Bermondsey, Surrey. They lived at Great Bolton as of 1881.

The family emigrated to Wellington, New Zealand in 1883 aboard the Ionic. He was recorded as a painter from Lancashire. ^[3]

He worked for the Railways before taking up farming in the Wairarapa. He retired to Palmerston North around 1900. ^[4]

He passed away 29 November 1930 age 86 at the residence of his son Samuel McNabb in Rangitane Street, Palmerston North, and is buried at Kelvin Grove Cemetery. He left a widow, one son and six daughters. ^{[4] [5] [6]}
