Elsie May Crowther was born in 1889 in Brighton, Victoria (Australia). She was the only daughter (with three older brothers!) of George Crowther and Alice Armstrong. [1]
Elsie served in London with the Voluntary Aid Detachment during the First World War.
Elsie married Doctor (Thomas) Victor Hurley, a senior medical officer in the AIF, on 10th June 1919 in St James' parish church, Westminster, London. [2] Back in Melbourne, the couple bought a house in South Yarra, from which they moved in 1926 to a larger one in Toorak to accommodate their growing family.
When Victor was knighted in 1950 Elsie became entitled as Lady Hurley.
Aged 72 years and having been widowed for three years, she passed away in 1961 in Royal Melbourne Hospital, Parkville. [3] She was survived by their six children and their families.
