Biography

Flag of Gloucestershire (adopted 2008)
Nicholas Crundall was born in Gloucestershire, England.

Nicholas was born about 1555 and was the son of Nicholas Crandall and his wife (name unknown).[1]

He married Elizabeth _____, perhaps Jones, (in 1600 John Jones was described as the brother-in-law of Nicholas in a bill of complaint). They had many children, but there is only documentary proof for three sons, John, William and Edward. The other children's relationships have been deduced indirectly.[1]

Nicolas was a Protestant priest, like his father. He may have lived for a time in Penterry, Monmouthshire, Wales before coming to Winterbourne in about 1588. In 1589, at his father's death, Nicholas was presented to the parish by his brother, James (inheritor of the advowson of the parish) as the incumbent of Winterbourne, succeeding his father.[1]

From 1589 to 1599, Nicholas was the Vicar of Winterbourne in Gloucestershire. Between 1590 and 1601 he was the subject of at least four lawsuits brought against him in the Star Chamber by Robert Bradston of Winterbourne. The end result of this was that Nicholas was suspended from his duties as vicar of Winterbourne on 7 May 1599 and then, a year later, was removed from his incumbency altogether.[2] A new vicar, Richard Bridges, was appointed on 20 Oct 1600.[1]

Nicholas sold the manor of Winterbourne before 12 Feb 1602/3 and his life after that point has not been traced.[1] There is a theory that Nicholas was imprisoned, circumstances unknown, and possibly died in prison sometime before 1608/1609 when administration was granted on the will of his son, John.[2]

His wife Elizabeth died in June 1605 and was buried at Winterbourne[3] on 20 Jun 1605. Nicholas was presumably living at that time, as Elizabeth was called "wife of Nicholas Crondall, clerk" in her burial record. There is no record of a burial for Nicholas, but he had died by 1608,[1] when his will was proved.

Research Notes

There is a well researched and thoroughly sourced account of the feud between the Bradstons and the Crandalls of Winterbourne on the website of the Frenchay Museum Archives.[2]
