Biography

1. James1 Cudworth Sr., son of Paul Cudworth and Sarah Drinkwater, (#5637) was born in Ward, Massachusetts 17 AUG 1795. Individual flags: War1812. James died 18 APR 1836 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 40. His body was interred APR 1836 in Rumsey-Doud Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.

He married Anna Doud BY 1822 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. (Anna Doud is #5638.) Anna was born 17 SEP 1799 in Hubbardton, Rutland County, Vermont. Anna was the daughter of Peleg Doud and Isabella Rumsey. Anna died 16 JAN 1866 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 66. Tioga County Agitator - Feb 14th 1866 issue: Died Jan 16th 1866 of Cancer, in Sullivan, Tioga County, Pa., Mrs. Anna Cudworth in her 67th year. Member of Baptist Church.

Her body was interred JAN 1866 in Mainesburg Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Anna was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Anna's household included one female and one male 5-10, one male 10-15, one female and one male 15-20.

She was listed as a household member of Jerome B. Cudworth's house in the Census of 1850 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Jerome was a farmer. Paul was a laborer.

James registered to pay taxes 1816 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Sullivan Township was formed in 1816. It was taken from Covington Township. Its original boundaries included the southern half of Rutland formed in 1829, and the northern part of Ward which was formed in 1852.

James was listed as the head of a family on the 1820 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. James was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Anna and James were 30-40 with four children under ten years old. James' death only six years later left Anna with a large and young family to raise alone. They lived next door to James' brother, Samuel. James migrated from Ward (now Auburn) Massachusetts with his parents in 1808. He served as a drummer boy in the War of 1812.

2 i. Jerome B.2 Cudworth (#6795) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania NOV 1822. Jerome died 1910 at age 87. His body was interred 1910 in Mainesburg Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He married Deborah A. Unknown (Cudworth) BEF 1850. (Deborah A. Unknown (Cudworth) is #5640.) Deborah was born MAR 1826 in Pennsylvania. Deborah died 06 APR 1907 at age 81. Her body was interred APR 1907 in Mainesburg Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. See details of Deborah's will in Jean Rumsey- Doud Ancestry p. RD92-6-i in which she refers to George Gardner as her foster son and Lizzie Dewitt as her adopted daughter. It is probably this Deborah "Cudworth" who is related in the April 1998 Mainesburg Church newspaper article as having stood up in 1874 to contribut the ten dollars she had saved to buy herself a silk dress to the church fund. Julia age 18 and Paul age 16 live with Jerome and Deborah in 1850. They are siblings of Jerome. His mother Anna also lives with him, it may be in fact that he and his wife are living with his mother rather than the other way around. 3 ii. Sarah Ann Cudworth (#6796) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 25 OCT 1821. Sarah died 18 MAR 1901 in Mainesburg, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 76. Her body was interred MAR 1901 in Mainesburg Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. She married Edward Anthony Fish 1846 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. (Edward Anthony Fish is #6809.) Edward was born 14 JAN 1821 in Bristol, Bristol County, Rhode Island. Edward was the son of Robert Fish and Sally Eastman Monro. Edward died 2 FEB 1894 in Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 73. His body was interred Feb 1894 in Mainesburg Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Monroe Genealogy page 223. See 1883 Tioga County History p. 14 appendix. A sheriff in Tioga County. Jean Rumsey has middle name as Ashley, but the Monroe is probably the more accurate reference.

4 iii. James Cudworth (#5639) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 17 AUG 1826. James died 16 JUL 1892 in Mainesburg, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 65. His body was interred JUL 1892 in Mainesburg Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He married Lydia Jane Whittaker 30 MAY 1849 in Tioga County, Pennsylvania. (Lydia Jane Whittaker is #6800.) Lydia was born 30 JAN 1830 in Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Lydia was the daughter of Peter Whittaker* and Ruth Lownsberry. Lydia died 17 FEB 1905 at age 75. Her body was interred Feb 1905 in Mainesburg Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. father born in Canada, mother in NY James Cudworth, son of James and Anna Cudworth, was born in Sullivan, August 17th 1826. His parents were early settlers. He has one of the finest farms in the township. His father died in 1836, and his mother in 1865. May 30th 1849 he married Lydia H., daughter of Peter and Ruth Whitaker of Richmond. They have two daughters and a son. Mr. C. furnished two substitutes in the Civil War, at an expense of $1000. (1883 Tioga County History page 31 of appendix) James was a farmer on his parents' homestead until 1885, when he went into partnership with J. W. DeWitt of Mainesburg,his son-in-law, in the mercantile business. He remained inthat business untilhis death. (Cudworth Genealogy, p. 150.)

5 iv. William W. Cudworth (#6797) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania JUN 1827. William died 13 SEP 1831 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 4. His body was interred SEP 1931 in Rumsey-Doud Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.

6 v. Julia Ann Cudworth (#6798) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 18 MAY 1832. Julia died 24 APR 1903 in Mainesburg, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 70. Her body was interred APR 1903 in Mainesburg Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Julia died of apoplexy. She was unmarried. In June 97, Gayle --- (Clark) reported that a Civil War marker on Julia's grave may indicate that she was nurse in the war.

7 vi. Paul C. Cudworth (#6799) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania JUL 1834. Paul died in Manistee, Michigan, at age unknown. He married Margaret Witter 25 MAY 1859 in Mainesburg, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Tioga County Agitator - June 2, 1859 issue: Married in Mainesburg, May 25th, at the residence of the bride's brother, by Rev. James Ross, Paul Cudworth of Sullivan and Miss Maggie Witter, formerly of Milton, PA. (Margaret Witter is #9563.)

Maggie was born 1840 in Pennsylvania. Maggie was the daughter of Amos Witter* and Abigail Delevan*. Witter or Whitton - See page 100 of Cudworth Genealogy. Alive in Michigan in 1900 census. Paul was living in Manistee, Michigan in the 1900 census. He married Margaret in Michigan in 1859. They musthave returned for some time to Mainesburg as Blanche is listed as having been born there. The Cudworth Genealogy, p. 150 details Margaret's ancestry (paternal, paternal, etc.) Paul died at Blanche's house.

Peleg Doud, a native of Hubbardton, Vermont came to Tioga county, Penns ylvania, about 1808 or 1809, and settled in Sullivan township. He was m arried in Vermont to Isabella Rumsey, to which union were born ten chil dren, eight in Vermont and two in Sullivan township, viz: Millie, who d ied in youth; Sally, who married John Gray; Betsey, who married Roswell W ebster; Lorena, who married James Gray; Anna who married James Cudworth , Sr.; Lurancy, who married Levi Rexford; Philemon, Munson, Peleg W. an d Ripley H. Mrs. Doud died in 1814. Her husband survived until about 18 40, dying at a ripe old age. Mr. Doud was one of the first settlers in S ullivan township. For many years he was a deacon in the Baptist church a nd services were often held at his house. In politics, he was a Whig.
