Biography

Jim G. Culver's Notes for George Jr.==========

George Culver Jr., the son of George Culver Sr and Martha Calloway, was born in Somerset County, Maryland about 1760. George married Eliza Ann Ellis (1775-1847) in 1791 in Hancock County, Georgia. They had eight children together. George died on 14 Nov 1830 in Hancock County, Georgia.

Jim Culver Note: Regarding the junior notation, I have never found any evidence of the Jr. or Sr. for his father. I have been researching this family for over 20 years now, and I have always used it to differentiate between the two. Nor have I found any evidence of a middle initial for either of them. In his will, Senior named him as "my son George Culver" (no middle name or initial to legally differentiate).

Possibly George P. Culver (another researcher, no evidence found). Also possibly George P. Junior (another researcher, no evidence found).

Upon his father John's death, George Culver Jr. became the guardian of his younger brothers, William, about 16 years old, and Salatheal, 14 years old, in Georgetown, Delaware in 1782.

Quote from his father George's will: "My will and my desire is my Son George should be my whole & Soul Executor of this my Estate and I do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament and no other." And he made his + mark beside the name George Culver."

Jim Culver Note: About 1790, George along with brothers Nathan, Salathael, and their first cousin, Joshua Joseph Culver (son of Aaron Culver) moved to Hancock County, Georgia. After arriving in Hancock County, George married Elizabeth Ellis who had also recently moved from Delaware to Georgia. They had eleven children. All of their children were born in Hancock County, Georgia.

George Culver paid taxes in Butler District of Hancock Co., GA in 1794 & 1796.

In the 1812 Hancock Co., GA list of taxable property for Capt. Newsome's District, George Culver owns the following: 6 Negroes, 250 acres of #3 land in Hancock County on Beaver Dam adjoining Capt. Newsome. The land was originally granted to George Culver.

In the list of land holdings in 1825 Hancock Co GA (p. 104), George Culver owned 522 acres in Hancock Co., located on Lake Ogeechee. His land was located next to the Atkinson property.

Spillers Quote: George's children are listed in a family bible, a copy of which Mr. John Culver, a descendant had in his possession in New Orleans, in 1958. Their marriages and descendants pg. 127-181).

14th Regimental Court of Enquiry Militia Minutes, Hancock County, Georgia transcribed by Troy Colquitt, notes that George W. Culver was exempted from military duty during his life on account of defective eyes. (George Walker Culver was the son of George Culver, Jr.)

The Smyrna Methodist Church was constituted in 1797 . George and Eliza Culver, as well as other members of the Culver and Ellis families, were members of Smyrna Methodist Church in Hancock County, GA. DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with George by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with George:
