David Alexander Curry (1860 - 1917)

David Alexander Curry was born on February 15, 1860 in Bloomington, Monroe, Indiana. He was a son of William Renwick Curry and Mary M Kerr.^[1]

Marriage

He married Jennie Etta Foster on March 6, 1880 in Monroe, Indiana.^[2] Together they had three children:^[3]

Yosemite National Park

The couple were school teachers who loved nature and trekked West to enjoy the offerings of the beautiful Yosemite region, finding that it was too expensive for them to stay there. In June of 1899 after they had retired from school teaching and moved to California, they established Camp Curry with the permission of Galen Clark who was the Yosemite Guardian (Yosemite was then still a state park). Camp Curry was located at the eastern end of the Valley among cedar trees and at the base of Glacier Point. For $2.00 a day, they provided a tent, good food, and the company of others seeking the same nature experience in the exquisite Yosemite Valley. Many of their first visitors were educators. David Curry was remembered by his daughter in a memoir as "big in body, mind and soul, interested in life and people, simple in his ways and habits, absolutely without any affection, his friendly spirit and genial whole-souledness appealed to people."

Death

David Alexander Curry injured his foot and later died of complications of diabetes on April 30, 1917 in San Francisco, California.^[4][5] He was buried at Cypress Lawn Memorial Park in Colma, San Mateo County, California.^[6]
