Biography

James was born in 1789 in Kentucky.

His daughter Anna married into the Todd family and was the sister-in-law of President Lincoln.

Occupations

  • 1860, 1870: County Judge
  • 1850: Lawyer

Residences

  • 1870: Cynthiana, Kentucky with his wife Martha, daughter Anna, and black domestic servants 48-year-old Eveline Edwards, 11-year-old Frank Edwards, and 16-year-old Dave Coleman
  • 1860: Cynthiana, Kentucky with his wife Martha, daughter Anna, granddaughter Martha, and 5 slaves
  • 1850: Harrison County, Kentucky with his wife Martha, children, and 7 slaves

Land Owner

  • 1860, 1870: $5,000 real estate value.

Enslaver

In 1860, James and Martha owned 5 slaves:

  • 44-year-old black male
  • 40-year-old black female possibly Eveline Edwards
  • 20-year-old mulatto female
  • 14-year-old black male
  • 12-year-old black female

In 1850, James and Martha owned 7 slaves:

  • 34-year-old black male
  • 30-year-old mulatto female possibly Eveline Edwards
  • 13-year-old mulatto female
  • 8-year-old black male
  • 6-year-old black female
  • 4-year-old black male
  • 2-year-old black female

It was not uncommon for enslavers to rape their female slaves, resulting in mixed race slave children - free vs. slave status was inherited from the mother - so the mulatto child (about 13 years old in 1850) may or may not have been James' daughter. If property and sale records are available, it may be possible to clarify.

Census Race

  • 1870: White
  • 1850, 1860: Unspecified

Death

He passed away in 1880 and is buried at Battle Grove Cemetery in Cynthiana, Kentucky.

Research Notes

Private Josephus Curry of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color, is a possible match for the 4- and/or 14-year-old black male in the 1850 and 1860 slave schedules, respectively. Further research needed.
