Biography

Bridget Curtin was born about 1860.

At age 19, she emigrated to New Zealand on the ship 'Wanganui' leaving Plymouth in August 1880 and arriving at Tauranga in November. Her occupation listed as General Servant.

She had 2 marriages. Her first was to Michael Sheehan of Coromandel in 1882. Bridget had 9 children during the marriage, five of who were baptised at St Colman's, Coromandel and the younger 4 at St Patricks Cathedral, Auckland. Her second son, Bartholomew was just 11 when he drowned at the Customs Street Saltwater baths in 1896. [1]

Bridget was to lose Michael when he was hospitalised at Auckland hospital where he died in January 1902, age 53. [2] A benefit concert was held by friends, including the McLachlans, to raise funds for Bridget and her family. Tragedy was to fall again for Bridget when her son, Thomas David Felix, died at the family home later that same year, aged 1. [3]

In 1903, Bridget remarried, to Henry McLachlan at her home on Cook street, Auckland. The ceremony was performed by her cousin Rev, Father Brodie. Her youngest son, William, died the following year aged 7 and in 1905, Bridget and Henry welcomed a daughter, Henrietta Alexis.

Bridget passed away in 1954 age 94 and is buried at Waikumete Cemetery. She outlived most of her family.
