Biography

Mary Cushing was born in Hanover.[1] She was baptized in the First Congregational Church of Hanover on 12 May 1734.[2] Mary Cushing was the daughter of Elijah Cushing and Elizabeth Barstow Cushing,, [3]

Mary married at age of twenty-one Benjamin Lincoln in Hingham on 15 January 1756. She was twenty-one years of age and he was twenty-two. [4]

Mary's father, Elijah Cushing, signed a will on March 6, 1761 that included a bequest to Mary. [5] "Item I give to my daughters Mary, Betty & Deborah & to their heirs & assigns forever equally to be divided two pieces of land lying in Hanover near the new forge one piece of about twenty-five acres Jbon of Amos Turner the other piece being about twenty-five acres," The daughters were also to be given, "one hundred thirty-three pounds six shillings and eight pence within two years" of his death. Her father died in 1762.

In the election, in 1787, General Benjamin Lincoln was elected lieutenant governour by the Legislature, having had a plurality of votes by the people.

In the 1790 U. S. Census [6] there were ten people in the household. The family was still in Hanover, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.

Benjamin Lincoln died in 1810. Mary died on January 23, 1816 and was buried in the cemetery in Hingham.

Research Notes

I am unable to confirm that Elizabeth Barstow was Mary's mother.

Elijah and Elizabeth (Barker) Cushing were the parents of Betsey Cushing who married Isaiah Cushing.

Note July 30, 2019 Cherry Cushing Duve Please see the profile for Elizabeth Barstow. She first married Isaac Barker and then as Elizabeth Barker married Elijah Cushing.
