Biography

David Cuthbertson was born in Bristol Township in 1843. He was the son of Lewis Cuthbertson and Elizabeth Reid. He married Margaret Whillans in Ottawa in 1870. He passed away in Ottawa in 1926.

In the passing of David Cuthbertson, Ottawa loses a business man of ability and a highly esteemed citizen. Although having reached an advanced age, being in his eighty-fourth year, Mr. Cuthbertson's death was unexpected, for he was in good health until a fortnight ago. In business circles he was widely known, having been a building contractor for many years, and to his achievements are such works as the Woods building, now occupied by governmental offices, the Roxborough Apartments, as well as many large residences throughout Ottawa. Since young manhood, Mr. Cuthbertson had lived in Ottawa. He was born at Bristol, Quebec of Scotch descent, his parents having come from Glasgow. They were among the earliest settlers of this district on Quebec province. The late Mr. Cuthbertson served in the Fenian raid, going with the contingent from Ottawa. He was a life-long member of Chalmers church, which at one time was the Bank street Presbyterian. He leaves three daughters, two sons and six grandchildren. His daughters are Mrs. F. R. Rochester of Torrington Place; Mrs. George M. Mason of Somerset street, and Mrs. Alec. F. Chamberlin of Clemow avenue; and the sons, Mr. Norman O. Cuthbertson of Broadway avenue and Mr. Clifford H. Cuthbertson of Westboro.[1]
