Bill's mother died when he was three years old. And his father died when he was twelve. He ended up living in Toronto, Ontario, Canada near the home of his aunt Maude and her husband George Herbert Wood, a Canadian financier. In 1911, he was actually staying with some of Herb's cousins and their mother who had just moved from Britain after the death of their father.[1]
By 1915, when he enlisted in the CEF, he was living at 73 South Drive in Toronto with Herb and Maude. He was assigned to the Canadian Corps Cyclist Battalion where he served 34 months in France, suffering damage to his hearing. On October 30, 1917, he was awarded the Field Medal for Bravery. He returned to Toronto when his unit was demobilized in 1919.[2]
In 1927, he married Christina Aitken in Toronto.[3]
