Biography

Church of Ireland Clergy

Charles Frederick D'Arcy was born on 2 January 1859 in Rehoboth House, Rehoboth, Dublin, Ireland. He was the son of John Charles D'Arcy and his wife Henrietta Anna Brierly.

He was educated at the High School, Dublin; and at Trinity College Dublin, where he had a distinguished career, obtaining 1st Place at Entrance, ist Honours in Mathematics and Ethics, 1st Math. Sch., 1882, B.A. (Sen. Mod. and Gold Medal in Mental and Moral Phil.) 1882; Div. Test (i) 1884, M.A. 1889, B.D. 1892, D.D. 1900.

He was ordained Deacon 1884 (Kilmore for Down), Priest 1885 (Down), Curate St. Thos., Belfast, 1884-90. Rector Billy (Connor) 1890-3, Rector Ballymena 1893-1900, Examaning Chaplain to Bishop of Down 1892-1903, Chaplain to L.L. 1895-1903, Dean of Belfast and Vicar St. Anne's 1900-3, Donnellan Lect. T.C.D. 1897-8 and 1914, Prebendary Connor 1890-1900, Canon of St. Patrick's, Dublin, 1902-3, Select Pr. Camb. Univ. 1907-8 and Oxford Univ. 1908-10.

In 1903 he was consecrated Bishop of Clogher. On November 5th, 1907, he was elected Bishop of Ossory, Ferns and Leighlin by the House of Bishops, from two names submitted by the Diocesan Synod. Elected Bishop of Down and Connor and Dromore by the Synod, Mar. 27, 1911, and on 6 August 1919 he was elected to the Archbishopric of Dublin. When Dr. Crazier died he was unanimously elected Primate by the House of Bishops, on 17 June 1920.

He died on 1 February 1938 in Armagh, Northern Ireland and is buried at Saint Patrick's Church of Ireland Cathedral, Armagh, Northern Ireland.

Charles Frederick D'Arcy was married to Harriet Le Brytt Lewis on 12 June 1889 in the Church of St Thomas's Belfast. [1]
