Biography
REBECCA DABNEY
CORNELIUS DABNEY (D’AUBIGNE?) and his brother JOHN came from England to Hanover County, Virginia, before 1722.(20) Although the Huguenot Society accepts them as Huguenot refugees, there is evidence that they may have been British.(21) CORNELIUS’ invalid wife died soon after arrival, and he married her caretaker SARAH JENNENS.(22) Their third son was JOHN DABNEY.(23)
JOHN married ANNA HARRIS and had eleven or twelve children, one being REBECCA DABNEY.(24) ANNA HARRIS was the daughter of MAJOR ROBERT HARRIS,(25) a prominent leader and civil servant of Hanover, Louisa, and Albemarle Counties.
In 1888, WILLIAM DABNEY published his Sketch of the Dabneys of Virginia,(26) based more heavily on family recollection and correspondence than scholarly research. In that book there is no information from direct descendants of REBECCA, but a letter from a great-grandson of her brother JOHN, JR. is quoted extensively.
That letter states that JOHN, JR. had a sister REBECCA who was the mother of COL. ROBERT WARREN.(27) There is another reference in the same book that REBECCA married a THOMAS WARREN and their son was COL. ROBERT WARREN.(28) Allowing for the author’s admitted distant, second hand information, it is easy to believe that EDWARD was misidentified as THOMAS. This connection is further supported by the 1787 Pittsylvania County tax list which shows EDWARD WARREN as being responsible for the taxes of JOHN DABNEY.(29)
