William Joseph Daly was born in 1892 at or about South Melbourne in the Colony of Victoria. He was the son of John Daly and Margaret Crough. He passed away in 1950.

Private William Joseph Daly enlisted into the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) on the 5th of February 1916 though some records suggest this should be the 21st of February 1916. His Next of Kin is listed as father, John Daly of 132 Highett Street, Richmond, Melbourne, Victoria. Originally he served with the 37th Battalion, B Company and this unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A34 Persic on 3 June 1916. Lance Corporal William Joseph Daly later served with the 59th Battalion before he returned to Australia on the 12th of December 1918.
