Joel Daniels was born on October 19, 1759, probably in Alloway, New Jersey to William Daniel and Rebecca Vickery.[1][2] William Daniel died in 1764 and his will mentions Joel and 7 other children.[3] Joel married Clarissa Wynn, who was not a Quaker. They had 11 children in 17 years. He died in 1807 in Sussex, New Brunswick, Canada, at the age of 48.
On the 26th 8th month 1776 Joel was disowned by his Quaker family for enlisting in the military and serving in the army.[4]
During the Revolutionary War, John and his brother, Joel DANIEL, were loyalists who served in the British army. After the war, the Bowens and John Daniel settled in Nova Scotia and Joel Daniel went to New Brunswick. An 1899 publication[8] lists Quakers who moved to New Brunswick and quoted an earlier source: "Agreeable to the desire of the Meeting for Sufferings we herewith produce the Names of most of the Members of our religious Society who went from within the limits of our Yearly Meeting of Pennsylvania & New Jersey to Nova Scotia and New Brunswick...Joel Daniel from near Salem, was a Member when he left home but says he has not been treated with for his outgoing in Marriage & does not know that he is disown'd. He lives in or near Frederickton in New Brunswick & was thought to be a reputable Man..."[9]
