Carey was born on 11 Sep 1832 in Greenupsburg, Greenup County, Kentucky, United States.[1][2] He was the son of Joseph C. Darlington and Maria R.[2]

He married Eliza Jane Phillips on 31 Jan 1856 in Bond County. Illinois, United States.[2][3][4]

Carey was a Civil War veteran. In 1861, at the first call for volunteers, he and his wife's 4 brothers enlisted.[2] He served the Union army as a musician in the 20th Regiment, Illinois Infantry.[5][6] He was 28, 6 feet tall, dark hair and eyes, and a carpenter.[6]

Carey and his family came to Southern California in 1874, and to Pasadena in about 1891.[2]

He passed away on 5 Mar 1901[2][1] in Pasadena, California, United States after a lingering illness[2] and was buried in Mountain View Cemetery and Mausoleum in Altadena, California, United States.[1]
