Newton Darnell was born on 05 Dec 1858 in Afton, DeKalb, Illinois to parents Cynthia Ann (Woods) Darnell (1823-1903) (who was born in Pennsylvania) and Enoch Darnell (1828-1878)(who was born in South Carolina).[1]
On 11 Aug 1860, Newton Darnell (1) and his parents, Enoch Darnell (32) and Cynthia Ann, were living with Sylvester J Richmond (42 and head of household) and his daughter, Amelia J Richmond (1), and an additional farm laborer, Ebenezer Sanders (25) in Afton, DeKalb, Illinois.[2]
On 28 Jul 1870, Enoch (42) and Cynthia (46) and two children, Newton (11) and Willis Darnell (abt.1865-1937) (4), and an additional Swedish born farm laborer, Nicholas Peterson (35) were living in Sycamore, DeKalb, Illinois at the Darnell home. His father was working as a farmer.[3]
At about age 20, on 12 Nov 1878, he lost his father to death.[4]
In 1880, Newton (21) was still single, living with his widowed mother Cynthia (57) and brother Willis (14). Both Newton and Willis were farming.[5]
On 9 Jan 1884, Newton married Emma Anna (Marshall) Darnell (abt.1863-1941) at her family home (i.e. home of her father, John Marshall) in DeKalb County, Illinois.[6][7] Five known children from this union were: George M Darnell (1885-1962), Arthur Darnell (1886-1980), Alice (Darnell) Weeden (1892-1977), Ruth (Darnell) Weeden (1903-1995)[1] and Nellie (Darnell) Westlake (1889-1989)[8]
In 1892 Newton Darnell owned 120 acres of land in DeKalb County, IL[9]
On 14 Apr 1917, after graduating from DeKalb's Normal College and while her parents were still living in Charter Grove, Illinois, their eldest daughter, Alice (Darnell) Weeden (1892-1977), married Lester Otis Weeden (1893-1984) at the Universalist parsonage in Sycamore, DeKalb, Illinois. Lester was the son of Samuel Weeden (1863-1931) and his wife of Sycamore. [10]
During the same year as his mother's death, Newton died at the age of 71, on 22 Jan 1930 in Sycamore, DeKalb, Illinois and was buried at the Ohio Grove Cemetery in Corland, DeKalb, IL[1].
