Dan Rowan was an American actor and comedian who was known in the television show "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In," in which he played straight man to Dick Martin and won the 1969 Emmy for Outstanding Variety or Musical Series.
Daniel Hale David, AKA Dan Rowan, was born in Beggs, Oklahoma to John and Clella Hale David. His parents were performers who traveled the carnival circuit. At the age of 11, he was orphaned and spent four years at the McClelland Home in Pueblo, Colorado. By age 16, he was adopted by foster parents.
On the 1940 US Federal Census, he listed in the home of Frank and Josephine Foley along with their son, Frank Albert Foley. His relationship to them is not listed on the census, but it is possible that this is his adoptive family.
At age 17, he was employed by Steelworks Center of the West, also in Pueblo, Colorado. Once he graduated from Central High School, he moved to Los Angeles where he got a job in the mailroom of Paramount Pictures.
During World War II, Dan served in the Army from 16 Dec 1941 through 20 Nov 1945. He served as a fighter pilot in the U.S. Army Air Force. Dan received the Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Air Medal, and the Purple Heart awards during his military career.
Following World War II, he returned to California where he began getting small parts in television shows. His on-screen debut was on "The Walter Winchell Show" in 1956. Finally, he developed a comedy act with Dick Martin and spent over two decades working together, most notably on "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In." The show ran from 1967 through 1973. Dan would retire from performing in the 1980s. He spent his retirement at his home in Florida and on a barge he owned in France.
Dan passed away on 22 September 1987 from Lymphoma.
